Practical Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Actions

Simple actions that remove barriers and widen access

Copy these EDI actions in your organisation

We believe EDI works best when it’s built into everyday practice. Below are practical actions we’ve embedded across our work to remove barriers, widen participation and support an inclusive Primary and Community Care workforce. Many of these are quick and easy to replicate.

Inclusive events

What we do

We review and action accessibility needs on event booking forms before each event such as sharing presentation slides in advance for people with dyslexia
We aim to publish event details at least six weeks in advance so people can plan their next rotas and any personal or professional responsibilities such as childcare
For in‑person events, we accommodate disabled access, signage, quiet / breastfeeding / prayer spaces and sound systems
We design events that are not centred around alcohol / not in venues such as bars or pubs, with options for different dietary requirements
We make our events free or heavily subsidised (with majority staff eligible for funding) to remove cost as a barrier

Easy actions you can take

Add one clear accessibility question to your booking form

Share slides with attendees before the session

Visit in-person venues with an EDI checklist before booking them

Accessible learning and information

What we do

We advise speakers to use clear headings, bullet points and visuals in slides
We ensure learning materials are non‑racist, non‑sexist and non‑discriminatory
We provide online and in‑person options, including recorded and self‑directed learning to meet different learning styles and pace of learning
We use plain language and accessible formatting across presentations and resources
We provide different channels (written and verbal formats) to ask questions, recognising different personalities and confidence in public speaking

Easy actions you can take

Use plain language and avoid jargon in learning materials

Record sessions or provide a follow‑up resource

Break content into short, clearly structured sections

Fair and thoughtful use of data

What we do

We present data using clear visuals, strong colour contrast and plain language
We are transparent about how data is collected, used and analysed
We allow people to request data in their preferred format
We offer help to people who need support understanding data or forms
We removed EDI demographic questions from forms where feedback showed they deterred completion

Easy actions you can take

Explain why you are collecting data and how it will be used

Offer an alternative to online forms where possible

Review whether every question you ask is genuinely needed

Inclusive training and development

What we do

We clearly state who can access apprenticeships, training programmes and funding opportunities
We travel to you to attend your meetings and events to increase your awareness of fully funded development opportunities, e.g. at PLTs
We check learning environments have appropriate EDI policies in place
We build inclusivity goals into our training programmes, e.g. the strategic leadership and management course
We review your training needs analysis results to deliver training tailored to your development requirements

Easy actions you can take

Clearly explain eligibility criteria in simple language

Include one clear inclusion goal in learning programmes

Request to present at events your audience are already attending

Everyday culture, wellbeing and representation

What we do

We proactively check in on learners and trainees about progress and wellbeing
We share career stories and routes from people with different backgrounds
We consult role and subject specialists when shaping workforce plans and surveys
We provide safe ways to raise concerns about micro‑aggressions or bias and disclose them through appropriate channels
We listen to feedback from lived experience and act on what we learn

Easy actions you can take

Schedule regular wellbeing check‑ins, not just performance reviews

Share real stories from a range of roles and backgrounds

Make it clear how people can raise concerns safely

Accessible digital communications

What we do

We design all digital content to meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standard
We ensure content is perceivable, including using alt text for images, captions for audio and video, sufficient colour contrast, and legible font size
We make content functional, with full keyboard navigation, clear headings and site structure, descriptive links and no time‑limited barriers
We write in plain language, avoiding jargon and acronyms, using short sentences and bullets, and keeping reading levels clear and manageable
We design digital services that are predictable and supportive, clearly signposting how to access offers, explaining next steps and how to avoid or correct errors

Easy actions you can take

Use clear headings, short sentences and descriptive link text

Add alt text to images, charts and infographics, or mark them as decorative with “”

Check colour contrast and text size before publishing content

We recognise EDI is ongoing work. We regularly review these actions based on feedback and lived experience, and we welcome learning from others.
