Do I have to pay for an apprenticeship?
No, NHS apprenticeships are fully funded, so there are no tuition fees or student loans to worry about.
Who can apply for an NHS apprenticeship?
Most apprenticeships are open to existing NHS staff, and some are open to new starters. You’ll need to meet the entry requirements for the specific apprenticeship pathway you’re interested in.
How long does an apprenticeship take?
It varies depending on the level and subject, most NHS apprenticeships take between 12 months and 4 years.
Will my workload change?
Your day-to-day duties may remain the same, but you’ll have protected time for your learning. Your manager and training provider will work with you to make sure you can balance both.
Can I do more than one apprenticeship?
Yes, as long as each apprenticeship is at a higher level or in a significantly different area to your previous one.
Will I still get paid while I do my apprenticeship?
Yes, you’ll continue to receive your NHS salary while you study and work.
Do I need previous qualifications?
It depends on the apprenticeship level.
Level 2–3: Usually no formal qualifications needed
Level 4–7: You may need relevant qualifications or experience
How much study time will I need?
By law, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours on learning and development. This includes online study, assignments, projects, or attending training days.
What happens after I finish my apprenticeship?
You’ll have a recognised qualification and the skills to progress in your NHS career, whether that’s moving into a new role, taking on more responsibility, or continuing to a higher-level apprenticeship.
