Cervical Sample Taker Initial Training Courses
Aims of the Course:
To ensure that on completion of the course the Health Care Professional (HCP) is competent in taking cervical samples for the purpose of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).
To provide HCPs involved in the NHSCSP with a sound theoretical base to support the practice of sample taking
To ensure that HCPs involved in the NHSCSP are competent in obtaining high quality cervical screening samples through supervised practice and independent external assessment of competence according to national benchmarks
To encourage HCPs to review their competencies regularly as part of their own professional development
Nine Month Training Component:
Attending a blended learning course covering the theory of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme in line with the Public Health England guidance
Up to 9 months practical training and visiting a Cytology Laboratory and Colposcopy Clinic during this period
Arrange and complete an independent external assessment
Submission of a Personal Training Record Book to evidence knowledge, reflective practice and a sampling audit
These events are granted 14 study hours accredited by the Royal College of Nursing Centre for Professional Accreditation
Who can apply?
Any registered nurse, midwife, doctor or physician associate or nursing associate who will be becoming actively involved in the Cervical Screening Programme. As a large component of the course entails sample taking, it is expected that the applicant will have access to a clinical setting for training.

It is expected that the student will complete all components within 9 months post attendance or participation in a blended learning theoretical study course, which will consist of both distance learning, video-link session and face-to-face practical/ simulation sessions.
In exceptional circumstances an extension may be granted upon application.
£550 per place (all inclusive)
2021-22 Course Dates and Venues:
Commencing 26th August 21 for Distance Learning content, plus face-to-face on either 8th or 9th September 21 at [Venue TBC]
Commencing 25th November 21 for Distance Learning content, plus face-to-face on either 8th or 9th December 21 at [Venue TBC]
Commencing 3rd March 22 for Distance Learning content, plus face-to-face on either 16th or 17th March 22 at [Venue TBC]
