Greener Thinking for Better Health

The latest Midlands Greener NHS Newsletter highlights exciting progress and initiatives helping the NHS move closer to its net zero targets. The newly published 10 Year Health Plan outlines key shifts in healthcare delivery, moving from hospitals to communities, analogue to digital, and from treatment to prevention. It reaffirms the NHS’s net zero commitment and places emphasis on wider environmental priorities such as cleaner air and energy-efficient housing. The edition also explores the important role nurses can play in supporting safer, more sustainable prescribing, including the switch from IV to oral antibiotics.

This issue also celebrates innovation in low carbon care, including the approval of the world’s first low-carbon COPD inhaler, new green skills training, and collaborative work with GIRFT to create greener clinical pathways. Additional resources include tools to help NHS organisations adapt to climate challenges, updates on sustainable procurement, and a range of free e-learning modules on environmental sustainability. The rollout of RSPB nature prescriptions across the West Midlands is also featured, promoting wellbeing through connection to the outdoors. It’s a packed edition full of learning, inspiration, and ways to take action.
