Collaboration in Action – Hot Topic Afternoon on Ophthalmology in Primary Care
Last Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting a hot topic afternoon focused on ophthalmology in Primary Care. Twenty-five Primary Care professionals gathered at Trent Vineyard in Nottingham to learn from ophthalmology experts. This event was made possible through a fantastic collaboration between Dr. James Waldron of the Nottingham Alliance Training Hub (NATH) and Dr. Adrian Kwa, Anaesthetist and Ophthalmology Lead at NUH.
Ophthalmology is a particularly challenging area for general practitioners (GPs). While we encounter eye-related issues frequently, confidence in diagnosing and managing these conditions can be tricky. The ophthalmoscope, for instance, remains a formidable tool for many of us — some of the attendees even had their first experience using it at the event. Fortunately, we had the expertise of three ophthalmology consultants who guided us through red eye (Mr Tariq Mohammed), acute visual loss and emergencies (Mr Anwar Zaman), and paediatric ophthalmology (Mr Shery Thomas), giving us a valuable overview of these difficult topics.
Presentations from consultants included:
Red eye - Mr Tariq Mohammed, corneal surgeon
Acute visual loss and other ocular emergencies - Mr Anwar Zaman, vitreo-retinal surgeon
Paediatric ophthalmology in the community - Mr Shery Thomas, paediatric ophthalmologist
Direct ophthalmoscopy - Miss Jane Marr and Consultant colleagues
This event demonstrated just how vital and effective joint initiatives between Primary and Secondary Care can be. Not only were new connections made, but existing networks were also strengthened, and crucial skills were learned.
The atmosphere in the room was brilliant, filled with a sense of co-production and mutual respect. The afternoon concluded with small group sessions where the consultants sat down with their Primary Care colleagues to offer hands-on guidance on using the ophthalmoscope. We even had some willing volunteers — registrars and GPs alike — who had their eyes dilated to give everyone a clear view and a real-life learning opportunity.
A special thanks to Dr. Alex Moore and Dr. Olyvia Poyser (Ophthalmology Registrars - NUH) for organising this event and to the hospital consultants for generously giving up their time. It was an invaluable experience for all involved.

The event fostered a better understanding and improved the interface between Primary and Secondary Care.
We hope to make this a yearly event, along with many other "Hot Topic" afternoons covering a range of important subjects. If you’re a colleague in Secondary Care or industry, we’d love to collaborate with you to bring further educational opportunities and networking events to our community.
Keep an eye out for future events — we hope to see you at one soon!
