Day in the life of a primary care Health and Wellbeing Coach
Written by Jason, 08/07/2026

About me

Name:
Jason
Current role:
Primary Care Network (PCN) Nottingham City East (NCE) Health & Wellbeing Coach
Work setting:
GP surgery and community
I am working in the Nottingham City to provide care and support to patients living with long-term health conditions, navigating challenges and health related goals with community providers, voluntary and GP services.

My career journey

I started with a passion for healthy lifestyle and sport activity playing LTA Tennis for Nottinghamshire, moving onto study at university level as a mature student. Here I developed a keen interest in public health, wellbeing, events planning and had the opportunity to support adults, children and families in sport coaching.

From the skills and knowledge learned as a Sports Coach and Fitness Advisor, my aspirations led me to seek a new position within the NHS.

How I got into this role

I have received training under the Health Coaching Foundations Programme and hold a qualification in Accredited Health Coaching Skills Training. Whilst neither course was required at the time of applying for the full-time post, the vocational route and further education has allowed me to apply evidence-based methods to empower others to make sustainable changes, and acquire specialisms in professional development.

What my role involves

My day consists of managing patient needs and 1-2-1 appointments through a caseload, receiving supervision and team meetings on a regular basis and connecting with community services.

What I enjoy most

I take pride in feedback from patients on their changes made within the time spent and care received via the service. Patients able to manage their health and wellbeing, feeling inspired to make lasting changes and share successes with friends, family members and peers.

Challenges

At times I find patient expectations most challenging due to preconceived thoughts on health and wellbeing discussions or unachievable patient goals within a 12-week time frame of the support offered.

Skills you need

Communication
Active listening
Teamwork
Organisation
Compassion
Problem-solving
Empathy
Reflective practice

My advice

The best way to learn is through varied experiences of practice, exploring NHS or company values, researching community and voluntary groups in your local area.

You may also wish to set time aside to revise common health conditions and build confidence in your ability to offer help to others.
