30-Minute Training to Strengthen Support for Armed Forces Patients
Published on 12/12/2025
Supporting the unique needs of the Armed Forces community is an important part of delivering truly inclusive, person-centred NHS care. To help busy teams build this confidence quickly, a new 30-minute national training and education programme has been launched, and itโ€™s now available for all NHS staff to book online.

This bite-sized training is designed for anyone working in primary or secondary care who wants to deepen their understanding of the Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans and their families. Whether youโ€™re in a patient-facing role or part of a wider support service, this programme provides practical tools you can apply immediately.

What the training covers

The programme gives staff a clear overview of the Armed Forces community and the challenges they may face when accessing healthcare. It includes:

Specialist insight into military culture, transition to civilian life, and related health needs
Practical knowledge to help staff provide more tailored, sensitive and effective care
Useful resources that can be shared across teams
Real stories and lived experience, helping to bring the training to life

Sessions are delivered by dedicated regional trainers, including veteran and Paralympian Gregg Stevenson MBE, whose short introductory video adds a powerful personal perspective.

While the training is short, the impact is long-lasting, helping staff build confidence, reduce barriers and improve continuity of care for this patient group.
