Developing a strong, diverse research workforce is essential to improving patient care, reducing health inequalities and shaping the future of health and social care. The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) INSIGHT Programme for the East Midlands has been designed to support exactly that.
This funded programme offers research engagement activities and Masters-level training opportunities for students and recent graduates from registered healthcare, social work and public health professions, with courses starting in Autumn 2026/27.
What Is the National Institute for Health and Care Research INSIGHT Programme?
The NIHR INSIGHT Programme provides early exposure to research for those who may be considering research alongside a clinical, professional or applied practice career.
The programme supports individuals who are curious about research but may not yet have had the opportunity to explore it formally, offering a supported and accessible entry point into academic and applied research pathways.
Who Is the Programme For?
The programme is open to:
Students and recent graduates from registered healthcare professions
Those working in social work
Professionals within public health
No previous research experience is required. The programme is designed to broaden participation and encourage people from a range of professional backgrounds to consider research as part of their future career.
What Does the Programme Offer?
Participants can access:
Funded research engagement activities
Funded Masters-level research training opportunities
Structured support to develop research skills, confidence and networks
Eligible Masters degree courses are available at: University of Nottingham and De Montfort University
These programmes are designed to equip participants with the skills needed to progress into research-focused roles or further academic training.
