South Asian Heritage Month - "Stories to Tell"
South Asian Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities across the world. The theme of South Asian Heritage Month 2023 focuses on "Stories to Tell," highlighting the importance of sharing personal and collective narratives that shape our understanding of identity and community.
NATH organised a first-of-its-kind event at the Indian Community Centre on Thursday 20th of July 2023 to bring together our South Asian colleagues and allies from across Primary Care and the ICB to celebrate and share stories about their journey to and through Primary care.
The theme "Stories to Tell" set the tone for us to reflect on the shared histories and experiences of South Asian communities. The history of migration, colonialism, and the struggle for independence has shaped the identities and narratives of many South Asians and this was very apparent in our session. We were delighted that colleagues brought their authentic selves to this event, many in traditional clothing and greeting one another in traditional manner.

We had senior colleagues reflecting on stories of their childhood that still influenced their care and compassion towards patients in Primary Care today. The struggles and barriers they had to overcome to reach their current roles and how that journey shaped them as the individual they are today. We heard how resilience was handed down like a baton from first-generation migrants to their children and grandchildren, overcoming racism and thriving despite societal challenges. We listened to our International Medical Graduate colleagues who despite their wealth of experience were often overlooked, and how they overcame barriers, and influenced and shaped policies to make Primary Care a more inclusive place to work.
The personal stories of resilience, adaptation, and success in the diaspora highlighted the enduring spirit of the South Asian community. We are so proud that we were able to provide a platform for our esteemed colleagues to share their experiences, and recognise and celebrate their positive contributions to Nottinghamshire's Primary Care.
