How Primary Care Colleagues Are Growing, Thriving and Transforming Patient Care

At Nottinghamshire Alliance Training Hub (NATH), everything we do starts with one belief: when you invest in people, you invest in the system.
Primary Care is powered by real humans, compassionate, skilled, committed professionals who show up every day to make a difference in their communities. Our role is to champion them, remove barriers to growth, and give them the tools, confidence and opportunities they need to thrive.

Through our funded training offers, colleagues across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have been able to access development that might otherwise feel out of reach, from clinical upskilling and condition-specific training to wellbeing, communication, leadership and creative therapeutic approaches. These aren't just courses; they are stepping stones that empower individuals, strengthen teams, and improve patient care at every level.

We’ve seen receptionists become health champions, Health Care Assistants grow into specialist practitioners, nurses expand their scope with confidence, and non-clinical staff bring new ideas and richer understanding into the heart of patient pathways. The impact is real, it’s human, and it’s happening because people feel supported to learn, evolve and embed their new knowledge back into practice.

And the best part?
You’re told us that this support is changing the way you work, and changing the way patients experience care.

Learning That Directly Improves Patient Care

A key theme across our evaluations is how relevant courses have been to day-to-day practice and patient needs.

One learner shared how their training immediately strengthened the way they support patients with Learning Disabilities:
1 Quote mark
The course was very relevant to my role. I can now explain the process to the patients with Learning Disabilities that I support and talk them through as I conduct the procedure.
Another learner reflected on how new clinical knowledge is now shaping safer practice:
1 Quote mark
The course helped me understand the anatomy of the ear and how to conduct the procedure safely.

Why this matters

These aren’t small changes, they directly influence safety, communication and patient reassurance. When staff feel confident explaining procedures, adapting their approach or applying new knowledge, patients experience calmer appointments, clearer information and healthier outcomes.

Responding to Changing Needs in Primary Care

The Primary Care landscape evolves quickly, and our workforce continues to rise to the challenge.

One colleague shared how their course helped them stay aligned with shifting demands:
1 Quote mark
This course was very much related to the place I work within. It helped me keep up to date on the forever changing needs of services and transfer them into practice.
Another learner described how new learning is helping them contribute more meaningfully to the Multi-Disciplinary Teams.
1 Quote mark
It allowed further insight into recognising frailty, such as using the clinical frailty scale, and has enabled me to discuss with MDT members with more confidence.

Why this matters

From frailty to service redesign, the ability to respond quickly and confidently is essential. Training supports staff to:

Adapt to new pathways and expectations
Contribute meaningfully in MDT discussions
Identify risks earlier
Support patients more holistically

This is exactly how strong Primary Care systems evolve and thrive.

Innovation, Creativity and Holistic Approaches

Some of the most inspiring feedback came from colleagues using specialist training to bring new therapeutic interventions into Primary Care

One learner strengthened their Primary Care Network's Creative Wellbeing offer after completing training in art therapy:
1 Quote mark
The course gave me the opportunity to learn through experiencing art therapy myself… It helped me understand different approaches and how it can be a therapeutic intervention for patients. It will help develop our Creative Wellbeing programme in the Primary Care Network.

Why this matters

Creative and therapeutic interventions bring new possibilities into Primary Care, especially for emotional health, long-term conditions and social isolation. Training empowers staff to introduce fresh, compassionate ideas into their practice and build more holistic, person-centred support.

Confidence Boosts That Change How Staff Engage With Patients

Across multiple evaluations, confidence came up again and again.
1 Quote mark
My approach towards patients will differ now that I have more understanding of how to work effectively with them.
1 Quote mark
The funding has helped increase my knowledge, which will benefit all the patients I work with.
1 Quote mark
The training has given me more confidence in encouraging people with poor mental health to exercise.

Why this matters

Confidence:

Improves communication
Strengthens decision-making
Supports early intervention
Enhances patient trust
Reduces burnout

Training doesn’t just build skills, it builds belief in those skills. And that transforms everything.

High-Quality Trainers, Practical Learning, and Supportive Groups

Many colleagues highlighted the quality of the learning experience itself:
1 Quote mark
Brilliant trainer, very knowledgeable and engaging.
1 Quote mark
Great to attend face to face for group discussions and troubleshooting.
1 Quote mark
The course leader simplified everything to make it easier to understand.

Why this matters

Supportive, interactive learning helps knowledge “stick”. It encourages reflection, connection and shared problem-solving, all essential in a busy, high-pressure healthcare system.

Strengthening Our Workforce, One Opportunity at a Time

What we hear from our learners makes one thing clear: funded training isn’t just about attending a course, it’s about transforming the way people feel, work and deliver care. Every piece of feedback shared speaks to the ripple effect that development has across Primary Care.

Staff feel supported, not overwhelmed

For many colleagues, day-to-day pressures can leave little room for reflection or learning. By removing financial barriers and providing protected time to train, we’re giving people permission to pause, grow and rebuild their confidence. Feeling supported in this way restores motivation, reduces isolation and reminds staff that their professional development truly matters.

Patients receive safer, more personalised care

When a clinician or non-clinical colleague develops new skills, their patients feel the benefit almost immediately. Whether it’s communicating more clearly, recognising risk earlier, performing procedures more safely or tailoring support to individual needs, these improvements translate directly into better outcomes and more positive patient experiences.

Teams gain new ideas and stronger communication

Funded opportunities expose colleagues to new perspectives, new tools and shared learning environments. This generates fresh ideas, encourages reflective conversations and strengthens collaboration within practices and PCNs. When one person grows, the whole team often grows with them, and that collective uplift is invaluable.

Primary Care grows more resilient for the future

As roles evolve and patient needs become more complex, ongoing development is essential. A trained, confident and connected workforce is better equipped to adapt, innovate and support system-wide change. Investment in learning today protects the long-term stability and sustainability of Primary Care tomorrow.
