Developing Advanced MSK Ultrasound Skills
As part of a Master’s level MSK ultrasound course funded by NATH, I completed a university assignment based on a clinical case, requiring discussion of ultrasound images, underlying pathology, imaging choice, and onward clinical implications. OpenAthens was invaluable to meeting the academic and clinical expectations of this work.
In my case I was assessing an elite 14 year old gymnast with a suspected high ankle injury. My ultrasound image confirmed this alongside experiencing what growth plates looked like on ultrasound. The assignment moved beyond image description, requiring critical evaluation of pathology and justification of ultrasound as the most appropriate imaging modality.
Accessing Evidence Through OpenAthens
Through OpenAthens, I accessed peer reviewed journals, MSK imaging reviews, and clinical guidelines that supported accurate image interpretation and evidence based clinical reasoning. This access enabled comparison of ultrasound with alternative imaging modalities, particularly MRI, and supported discussion of diagnostic accuracy, limitations, and appropriate escalation.
High quality literature accessed via OpenAthens strengthened my discussion of ultrasound features, alongside supporting analysis of how imaging findings influence management decisions and referral pathways etc.
Supporting Academic Success in Clinical Practice
Overall, OpenAthens played a vital role in supporting my academic assignment whilst supporting development of evidence based MSK ultrasound practice and enhanced my ability to justify imaging decisions at Master’s level. If you are completing courses to develop your skills especially when reviewing and critiquing the evidence is key, don’t forget to use OpenAthens.
