NTU Nursing Placements
Nottingham Trent University runs BSc and Degree Apprentice level nursing courses and as part of these courses 50% of the student workload is being out on placement.
Each student is required to complete a community placement and many are keen to experience nursing in a GP surgery compared to a hospital setting. Supporting a student nurse on placement is a great way to support the future workforce but also to showcase primary care as an employment option to students when they graduate.
Students go on 3 placements blocks a year, 6 weeks at a time for 1st years, 7 weeks for 2nd years and 8 weeks for 3rd years to ensure they complete the NMC required number of hours. For taking on a student nurse you will also receive the NHS England tariff which currently stands at £95p/w and is paid in arrears 3 times a year.
Could you host an NTU nursing student on placement for 6-8 weeks? They would observe and assist with your day-to-day duties to learn what it is to work in primary care and achieve their key competencies. This is a great opportunity to attract fresh talent into primary care.
NTU Paramedic Placements
Nottingham Trent Univery runs BSc and Degree Apprentice Paramedic Science Degrees. Whilst the students spend the majority of their placement working for EMAS on the ambulances, they are also required to complete a number of placements in areas such as theatres, maternity wards, A&E and patient assessment areas.
Primary Care is one of the options for patient assessment where students would need to spend 1 week working in a surgery where they can actively participate in the assessment of patients to ascertain any differences or additional procedures which may take place in this acute environment.
It is envisaged that completing this placement will allow students to understand the role of primary care services and acute care and how their pre-hospital care delivered influences the patient journey. It will give the student an insight to the pressures of acute admitting clinical areas, and managing the patients well in the community with the extensive services that are provided of which they may not be fully aware.
