In May 2022, 130 Early Career GPs from all across the East Midlands came together for our “First 5 GP Annual Conference”. Our motto – “Network, Thrive, Be Inspired” to is aimed at kickstarting Early Career GPs careers. So this is what we set out to do, through a day of fun, food, amazing speakers and inspirational workshops!

"Really interesting and inspiring speakers. Had made me feel excited and positive about a future in GP"
A quote from one of our attendees
This was the one of the first forays back into face-to-face events in a long time but not only that, this was the biggest First 5 Conference held! It and was a collaboration between NATH, the LLR Training Hub and the RCGP. We were also supported by Training Hubs across the whole of the East Midlands.! A truly collaborative effort!

The MCs for the day: NATH’s Dr James Waldron along with Leicester’s Dr Adam Mulla and Dr Phil Green.

Our day was packed with amazing speakers and workshops. Times bestseller author Dr Rachel Clarke (Author of “Your life in My Hands” and 2 other The Times best sellers) shared emotive and touching stories of working in palliative through the COVID pandemic. Dr Rachel Morris (Coach and “You are not a frog” Podcast presenter) shared her techniques for progression, stability and being the best you can be and Dr Robert Varnam (former Director of Primary Care Improvement – NHS England and Coach) rounded things off boosting delegates confidence in leadership urging them to “Lead with why” to stimulate real change.

Workshops throughout the day built on our themes to Network with each other with New to Practice programmes, be Inspired with our prestigious speakers and Thrive in general practice with workshops around finances, wellbeing, digital medicine and partnerships. A really full programme.

The atmosphere throughout the day was wonderful, energetic and so positive. Friends were made, resilience and happiness boosted and in doing so has strengthened Primary Care across the whole of the East Midlands.

Watching people smile, laugh and enjoy each other’s company after such a long time being shut in and struggling with workload during the pandemic was heart-warming. I felt energised and refreshed and the delegates did too, and at the end of the day, when many might have rushed off, 50 or so GPs stayed to continue to eat, drink and be merry and enjoy each other’s company.
Some great feedback from our attendees on the day. Did you miss the conference? No worries! After the roaring success of last year’s First 5 GP Conference, we are excited to bring you an even bigger and better event which builds on the programme of last year! We will take head on the new opportunities for growth, innovation, and inspiration that 2023 will bring.
